coyotes, bears, etc
Hey All,
My vacation from bears may be over.
I think there were five bears here today.
One was the yearling who is just on his own, the one with the blaze on his chest.
Then long-face bear/also called varsity bear, because of his v-shaped blaze on his chest.
Then the mother bear who just kicked out her children came by with a big bear. I don’t know if it was the one I called Big Bear. I just know he was a big bear. She didn’t seem to be particularly happy to be with him. But maybe she’s still just disconsolate from leaving/losing her cubs.
In breeding season, the bears aren’t monogamous. The females mate with a few different males. She was with Varsity Bear a couple of weeks ago, and she didn’t seem to dislike him.
Then she was still here, and another bear. I couldn’t tell if this latter is a male or female. About the size of a female, but with more broad and strong shoulders than is usual for females, but sometimes happens.
There was also, at a different time, a coyote around. Coyotes are so much more skittish. There was a gunshot in the distance, and the coyote flinched then ran. I’ve mentioned before that interestingly, bears aren’t scared of distant gunshots.
I was going to tell a story about the homeless one-legged vet I’m trying to get disability from the VA, but it’s too late at night. I’ll tell it tomorrow.
Thank you,
Derrick
